Īgain, not the penetration I am use to with the faster crossbow, but it looked like a good hit none the less. I zone in on a yearling heading out to the corn and when it stops about 18 yards out I repeat the smooth action of the morning draw and get a hit. The “Honey Hole “ is surrounded by food source ( apples / standing corn / plowed corn debris / winter wheat ) > So I choose the climber for an evening stand …ġst couple hours were slow and I may have dozed off a couple times … I hear turkey clucks and look around > soon after when I spot a shadow walking thru the bush. īTW ! Here is a shot back at the barn with the bird dried out and preened for a picture. I fire a couple target shots with the Red Wing and all seems well ( not tight groups but “ boiler room worthy “ at 20 yards ). and I might have even slept a bit in the truck while I planned my afternoon stand ….

“Long Story Short” a beauty mature doe pauses in a sweet 20 yard opening > I drop to one knee tilt / draw / anchor / release and like a pro ! > Only to watch in confusion as the arrow sails way high and to the right ! I’m standing there jaw dropped thinking “ How the heck did I do that “ ! ?Īnyway … clean miss > I gather my Turkey prize and gear then head out to do some more scouting.
Well that feeling was short lived because after taking pictures and getting my gear sorted in the blind, I see two deer cross the field and another coming my way … Man am I happy ! I’m strutting around all puffy chested and think to myself “ I’m a world class instinctive shooting recurve Ninja “ The arrow broke with broad head in the bird and I find him close by in heavy cover. I drop to one knee tilt / draw / anchor / release and nail that bird perfect ! I don’t get the penetration I’m use to and the bird wing beats into cover carrying the arrow. Then I see one bearded bird heading to a 20 yard opening … I scramble to get the Red Wing in position and soon find out just how awkward it is to shoot that recurve out of a blind ! ( I practiced earlier but not under pressure ) …
I was about one hour in and I fell asleep ( I’m told by my hunting buddies > I power nap often lately ) … jarred awake by the sounds of alarm clucks right outside the blind ! I mean they were close ! I see young non bearded birds and snap a few quick pictures out the blind window …as they head into the cover … pic’s are blurry, in a hurry. The North/West corner is a natural funnel between two properties … I settle in to the blind and do some calling … Hustled around to the East side ( I’m able to drive right up to the bush from the farm thru a plowed field ). Saw two bearded birds on the other side of the bush that I was setting up in … Heard turkeys early on … 1st part of the morning was un-eventful, then things heated up and I ended up taking a beauty Tom with that old Red Wing Recurve. Tuesday “ New Moon “ and lots of action at a new farm I call the “Honey Hole “ … basically hasn’t been hunted much except in the gun hunt so the whitetail archery season and fall turkey hunt looked promising as I mentioned in a previous post. But man I love this time of year as the tree colors change ! No real action on Monday > Did some scouting and bush hogged some trails at Frank V’s recently acquired hunting spot.
